What is the need for ‘Syrian Christian’ tag ?

via GSK Menon published on July 4, 2011

A sect of Kerala Christians even now goes about brandishing a curious tag called ” Syrian Christians”. From this tag can you infer whether they are Indians/Keralities ? No, it would appear to any common man that these people are Syrians and not Muslims but Christians. They go about talking about Syrian customs, dishes and names of their Padres are all tounge twisters.

No community in India continues to identify themselves with their foreign connections. Muslims could easily identify themselves as Arab_Muslims, Afghan Muslims, Turk Muslims, Persian Muslims, Central Asian Muslims etc but they never do so. In fact, in all fairness to them, every Muslim identifies themselves as Indian Muslims only. No Parsi identifies themselves as Iranian Parsis. Not a single Jew claims that they are Israeli Jews. It is only this brand of converts who go about advertising their “Syrian” links.

Who cares for Syria or Lebanon, we are Indians first and foremost. All degrading foreign links are secondary and inconsequential. Let us hope this tag will be renounced.
