KANNUR: A group of unidentified persons set afire bundles of Malayalam daily `Mathrubhumi’ at the Thalassery railway station premises on Tuesday.

According to police, eight masked persons attacked a pick-up van as it stopped at the railway station to deliver newspaper bundles there.

The group dragged the driver out of his vehicle, seized 109 bundles of the newspaper and set them on fire using petrol, inside the railway station premises, police said, adding that they had registered a suo motu case under IPC provisions.

No arrests have been made so far, they said.

According to sources at the daily’s Thalassery bureau, the group had set on fire 10,073 copies of the newspaper and 440 copies of the Mathrubhumi weekly, meant for distribution in the town and nearby areas.

Following the incident, the daily re-printed the copies and distributed it in the localities, they said.

A group of persons had set on fire copies of ‘Malayala Manorama’ daily inside the Thalassery municipal bus stand and also attacked ‘Mathrubhumi’ daily’s office in the town on June 7, when the CPI(M) was observing `black day’ to protest the Governor giving sanction to the CBI to prosecute CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan in the SNC-Lavalin graft case.
