The mother lost and the party won

The Supreme Court’s verdict on Jayakrishnan Master murder case has been a great shock to the bereaved mother of late Master who was the sole bread earner for a family of seven. On 27 July 2005 when the high court upheld the Session Court’s verdict against the first five accused in the case to hang them until death, Master’s family and thousand of others who loved him had the solace that at least the culprits have been punished. But, the Supreme Court’s verdict has been against all expectations and clearly exposes how the power of politics and money could influence the outcome of cold blooded murder.

The murder was committed on 01 December 1999 when LDF government was in power. From the very beginning, the police and investigating authorities have sided with the accused and the Supreme Court in its verdict has made clear mention about such lapses.  From the time that the Thalassery Sessions Court ‘s verdict came against the accused in August 2003, the CPM has been engaged in all kinds of maneuvers to avert the death sentence. The party collected over 1.25 crore rupees through a statewide hundi collection to fight the case in the upper courts. The change in government also helped them in fighting the case at the Supreme Court where they could afford to field senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani to fight for the accused.  Whereas, the casual approach of the public prosecutor, switching side of the first witness, inability of the students to identity the accused in a parade staged four months after the incident, insufficient evidence presented by the police – all went in favour of the accused.

The heartless communist criminals undertook demonstrations (‘Victory March’) yesterday in front of the old aged mother of Jayakrishan Master near his house. They shouted slogans against her and Jayakrishan Master. They distributed sweets nearby areas and appealed the people to celebrate the day.

Comrades released from the jail were accorded a heroic welcome for escaping from such a bloody murder of a school teacher committed in broad day light, in a classroom in front of his students. The local communist leaders specially arranged a welcome meeting in front of the Mokeri East UP School, the very place where Jayakrishnan master was murdered seven years ago by the same criminals.

The comrades definitely have a reason to rejoice on the great escape stage managed by party machinery which has every thing now at their disposal. But, can they escape from the curse of a bereaved mother shedding tears for over seven years and struggling for the subsistence of a family of seven left without a pillar for support?
