CHENNAI: A teenager hanged herself on Friday evening after a school teacher twisted and pinched her ears in front of her classmates for dress-code violation. The 14-year-old girl’s parents accused the teacher of rapping her several times over dress code and hairstyle.

V Ramya, a class 9 student of Emmanuel Methodist Higher Secondary Matriculation School in Pudur near Padi, came back home weeping from school around 5pm. Ramya’s mother V Sudha (30) said, “She told me that the teacher twisted her ears and told her not to show off like Silk Smitha. The teacher is notorious among students and always rude.”

“She was scolded in front of her classmates, and I know it’s what upset her the most,” Sudha said. “I tried to comfort her.” After a while, she locked herself up in a room in the annexe of their house. “I thought she was changing her dress,” Sudha said.

When the family members didn’t see her for about half an hour, they furiously knocked the door. When she didn’t respond, they broke it down.

“We found her hanging from a ceiling fan; and she had used her mother’s sari. We took her to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital but doctors said she was dead,” said V Prakash, a relative. Ramya’s father D Vijayakumar said, “The school does not allow girls to sport bindis or flowers. She fretted over it, but we brushed it aside often. And now I have lost my child”.

“It was she who asked me to go to Dubai,” said Vijaykumar, who works in a company in the Middle East.

“Six months ago, we had warned the management against tormenting children. But they never took it seriously,” Sudha said. The management was not available for comment on the allegations against their teacher.

Korattur police have filed a case of unnatural death. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Saturday.
