The sexual abuse of minor girls at Nerul’s Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission orphanage was a family affair; it has emerged after Saturday’s arrest of 65-year-old Samuel Pagi, the father of main accused Satish Pagi. Pune-based Samuel’s role in the case came to light early last week, when police and a counsellor spoke to the 19 girls rescued from the orphanage.

The victim said that some months ago, Samuel had come to live with Satish and daughter-in-law Anita at the orphanage, and that’s when he sexually abused her. An investigating officer said, “The victim narrated her ordeal… Samuel called her while he watched television, and then abusing her. She told Anita about the incident, but she ignored her complaint.”

Senior Inspector from Nerul Police Station Rajkumar Chaphekar confirmed Samuel’s arrest, and said, “We are not leaving any stone unturned (in booking the culprits). When we found that Satish’s father was also involved in torturing the girls, our team arrested him.”

On September 1, the Nerul police had arrested Satish and Anita on charges of abusing 12 minor girls within the orphanage premises. The duo was given the responsibility by the trust to take care of the 12 girls aged between 5 and 10 years.

Satish allegedly molested the minor girls turn by turn. However, on the night of August 31, eight girls managed to escape from the orphanage, and were found near Nerul Police Station.
With Samuel’s arrest, the case seems to have become murkier. Investigators have revealed that interviews with the girls have thrown light on a lot of other issues. For instance, the number of victims earlier believed to be seven. An officer said, “Initially, only three girls were found to be sexually abused. Later, we found four more victims among the seven girls who had been shifted to the Pune branch of the orphanage from Nerul. In the recent interviews, the girls have revealed that almost all of them were subjected to sexual abuse. A lot of credit should go to our counsellor, who is ensuring the victims are feeling secure and comfortable.”

More filth could emerge from the Pagis’ horror house, as police have found that around 50 girls were transferred out of Nerul to Pune in the last 12 years. “Only 19 girls have been interviewed so far,” an officer said, “But we suspect that Pagi could have abused many more girls in the Nerul shelter. All the other girls are now at the Pune shelter, and they will be interviewed.”

After Nerul police found some of the victims on September 1, Mumbai Mirror traced seven other girls who had been transferred out of the Nerul shelter barely a couple of months ago. Of the seven girls, aged between 12 and 16, who were rescued by the police, four alleged sexual abuse by Pagi.

Samuel has been remanded in police custody till October 14
