Ten days before he was found dead in Chennai, Sadiq Batcha, close aide of former Union communications and IT minister A. Raja, told a friend that he had received Rs 1,000 crore in kickbacks from the 2G spectrum swindle while his political mentor pocketed over Rs 7,000 crore.

“Batcha called me on the phone around 10 days before he killed himself and admitted that he received Rs 1,000 crore while Raja made over Rs 7,000 crore,” said the businessman’s friend and CPI(M) functionary N. Chelladurai, who is from Perambalur like Batcha and Raja.

“Batcha said he had helped Raja with hawala transactions to cover up the money trail,” Mr Chelladurai told Deccan Chronicle.

“Batcha said his wife was asking him to turn approver in the 2G spectrum case that is being investigated by the CBI. He said his wife was threatening to commit suicide if he was not ready to turn approver. But he was under heavy pressure from Raja’s camp, which insisted that he not turn approver,” said Chelladurai, former CPI(M) district secretary of Perambalur.

People in Perambalur remembered the public banquets Batcha hosted during Ramadan. “He invited people from all walks of life. Political leaders from all parties were invited to these events,” one of his friends said. Bhuvaneswari Devarajan, wife of a former Perambalur MLA, who also knew Batcha well, recalled his generosity and ambition.

“He wanted to be a businessman like Mukesh Ambani and was always ready to help the poor,” she said. People who were close to Batcha noted that at least 100 families in Perambalur make a living by working for his business interests in that district.

COMMENT:

The last 2 paras are so typical of the ‘maudlin & infantile’ media that we Indians are ‘cursed’ with. Batcha must have used hawala & ill-gotten wealth for the Ramadan feasts. And the maudlin media shows that as a ‘Good Conduct Badge’. What an asinine sense of perspective in our media !! This is how the unsuspecting
‘Aam Aadmi / Aurat’ are MISLED !!

Cry the beloved country.
