Sant Singh Chatwal and Nun Theresa

via Narendran published on February 5, 2010

The Indian Express has been waging many a battles ‘for honesty in public life’. The latest one is about the devious manner in which Sant Singh Chatwal, the London hotelier, was selected for the Padmabhushan award. Here is a copy my letter to Indian Express expressing my solidarity with them on that issue.

“ In regard to your front page story on ‘de-honoring’ individuals who get honored undeservedly by the government, the NRI hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal is only a mere babe in the real world of fraud as compared to the dead nun Theresa who was awarded the so called highest award- Bharatratna. I am all for honesty and such like in public life. My purpose is only to inform you about it in case you are not aware of it and to run another story on a similar fraud in public interest if it fits you.

Is there a provision in the award rules to ‘de-honor’ a person posthumously who did not deserve the honor in the first place? If not, there ought to be one. “
