Probe Sister Philo Murder; Tales of More Abhaya’s surfacing

via HK published on May 3, 2008

Thrissivaperur : Death of Sister Philo in Pavarotty Convent
has once again put the Christian Sabha leaders in trouble. The controversial
death of Sister Philo happened on March 20,1994 and the cover up that followed
her death has prompted the local people to demand for CBI enquiry.

According to the Bishops, and the Police FIR, Sister Philo died of
electrocution while watering the plants in convent garden. However, post mortem
reports later confirmed that she died of poisoning, after consuming a deadly
poison “Nuvacrone” which is used as a pesticide. Moreover, in the
post mortem report, there were references to several cuts and wounds found on
her body, especially in the lower abdomen and genital region. But Police and
the investigation officers purposely covered up the references on wounds from
public’s attention in a bid to save the real culprits. Recently it has come to
light that, the basic requirements to be observed, while conducting
post-mortem and sending body parts for chemical analysis of female dead-bodies
died in unknown circumstances, has not been followed or recorded properly.

Action committee members claim that, Sister Philo who fell unconscious after
attempt of sexual assault was forced to consume Nuvacrone for killing her and
destroying the evidence. Later she was subjected to electric shock for avoiding
questions like “why did a sister poison herself?”.Refering to
post-mortem reports, action council members confirmed that there were 10 major
injuries on her body out of which 7 has happened due to sexual assault. There are
allegations of attempts from Christian management to hush-up the un-natural
death of sister Philo.

It may also be remembered that, there was a similar incident of another death
from the same convent two years ago. Tragedy struck upon Jisamol, a student in
the nursing college under the same management was murdered under mysterious circumstances.
Though it was widely known that she was killed during sexual assault, the
police investigation did not find any clue. In this case, the victim’s
relatives had named a priest from Vernacular district as the prime accused.

It is said that a Police officer widely considered ‘sincere
and honest’ had intervened to freeze the progress of investigation. However, the
action council along with the local people are strongly demanding CBI enquiry
into both murders. They also demanded thorough interrogation of people at
convent and church for bringing out the culprits who are enoying freedom under
the influential church management.

Action Council members Sri Antony Chittatukara, Sri Sridharan Therambil and SriFranci
Mattom along with Binni Devasya .mother of deceased Jisamol conducted a press
meet few days back to inform the further course of action.
