Srikakulam: Christian missionaries are exploiting the innocence and backwardness of fishermen of coastal areas of Srikakulam district by indulging in mass conversions.

Christian organizations have been deceiving people in the name of services. Massive number of conversions are going on in Ranasthalam, Eccherla, Sompeta, Kaviti, Vajrapu Kotturu, Gara mandals of the Srikakulam district.

Missionaries and Christian population in huge numbers from Orissa have been spreading their tentacles across Icchapuram mandal, Donkur, Sompeta, Erramukkam, Ranasthalam,Eccherla and indulging in forced conversions. The culprits have occupied forest lands, while flouting CRZ rules have started Churches and prayer houses across the villages of the Coastal region.

Lack of opportunities in this area forced many youth and male members of the families to migrate to distant places for work. This situation is viewed as a boon by missionaries. The women folk are lured by various fake promises and converted to Christianity. About 30 percent of the population in Sompeta, Kaviti, Icchapuram have so far converted to Christianity. Fisherman who worship Gangammatalli according to their age old tradition have abandoned the same upon conversion to Christianity. Social tensions are rising due to the foolish and fundamentalist behaviour developing among the converts.
