KOZHIKODE: A New controversy has erupted in the Muslim community with the National Development Front (NDF) accusing that the major Muslim organisations in the state are not sincere in their dawa (missionary) work to propagate Islam among other communities.

A study conducted by the Institute of Objective Studies, a pro-NDF organisation, claimed to have found that the Muslim organisations are not serious about the dawa work and are not professional and scientific like the Christian and Hindu missionaries.

“Many Muslim organisations hold the view that dawa work is fundamental to Muslims. But the same organisations pay scant attention to the work,” said P Koya, NDF supreme council member who wrote an article in the Thejas magazine on the topic.

The article says that the average number of non-Muslims who were converted to Islam in an year in the state is between 1200 and 1300 which is negligible considering the population of Kerala.

It says that majority of the books and publications brought out by the Muslim organisations are not addressed to the non-Muslims. The budget allocated by these organisations for dawa work are either meagre or not fully utilised for meaningful work.

NDF believes that Muslim organisations are spending their money and energy to rebut the issues raised by the rival factions and to hold mammoth conferences to prove their strength. The dawa works they do lack the vigour to question the principles of other religions.

But the Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (SKSSF) bluntly says that dawa work does not mean converting others to Islam.

“At one level it means to bring the Muslims, who have strayed away from faith, back to belief. The other is to allay the wrong notions about Islam from the minds of the non-Muslims. Those who find Islam acceptable may get converted, but its not compulsory,” says Nazar Faizi Koodathayi, the general secretary of the SKSSF.

“We only try make people from other religions to understand Islam. Dawa work is not just increasing the number of Muslims as done by political parties,” he said.

According to Nazar Faizi, the NDF is the greatest impediment for dawa work in Kerala. “The activities of the NDF has created a wrong notion about Islam in the minds of non-Muslims. The outfit needs to be disbanded for meaningful dawa work in Kerala,” he says.
