Myth of “Minority perscution in Gujarath” and our ‘Secular’ Journalists

via H. Balakrishnan published on November 27, 2006

It’s a fashion among our so called Secular Journalist’s to conclude each and every article (Whether it be any article ranging from  Indian cricket Team’s poor performance to India- China relationship!)  by stating ‘that the main concern of the nation is the minority persecution in Gujarat!

TJS George also  concluded his “India & China: Ready for the bad news?”(TNSE-26NOV),by stating that the main concerns of our leaders, among others,is ‘minority persecution in Gujarat’

This has aroused my curiosity.Wonder, whether the ‘persecution’ is on the lines followed by the Portugese when they ruled Goa?

For example, a certain St.Francis Xavier writing to the King of Portugal,on 16 May 1545: ‘The second necessity for the ‘Christians’ is that your Majesty establish the Holy Inquisition’.

Or for that matter,a letter written 4 Nov 1518, by Frair Antonio to the King of Portugal:‘Sir,there is a great temple  in this island of Divar which has much freestone. We pray Your Majesty  to make a gift of it to the monastery’.

Or,is it on the lines of the 56 ‘Edicts of the Inquisition’ promulgated in 1560, such as:”The said natives of India are hereby ordered that during the season of the appearance of new crops, they should not arrange feasts in their houses‘ etc. Could you please elucidate,George?

On the contrary, open source literature reveals a different story! For example, there was a hue and cry in media reports about ‘persecution’ of missionaries by the ‘saffronites’ in 1999 at Dangs,Gujarat. But according to the local Sarvodaya leaders,it was aggressive ‘conversion efforts’ of the missionaries that led to the tribals attacking the missionaries!!

‘Secular’ Justice Rajinder Sachar’s report, published in the TNIE,indicates that Muslims are ‘better-off in Gujarat’ than their brethern in ‘secular’ West Bengal!!How come,George?

A well known ‘secular’ Editor of popular English daily had written, in the aftermath of Godhra:’Any media-indeed,any secular establishment-that fails to take into account the genuine concerns of the people, risks losing its credibility’. Aren’t you ‘there already’ George, in matters ‘SECULAR’?!
