Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
Chief Minister, West Bengal, India

Hon’ble Chief Minister Bhattacharjee,

Forwarded hereunder is an explosive and a startling complaint revealing that a Muslim individual has grabbed Lord Krishna temple in Gopalpur Mouza, Basirhat district in West Bengal and that its lands with extreme communal intent have been falsely recorded under various names leaving literally nothing for the temple, its maintenance, management and devotees (Attachment A). Such robbery in broad day light, under one pretext or the other (essentially constituting acts of antagonism against Hindus) – is extremely provocative and bears potential of engulfing the state in an unprecedented communal strife anew. To prevent the situation from taking such an ugly turn an immediate official intervention seems to be an absolute necessity. In a country where freedom and equality of all religions is guaranteed, such a naked aggression by one religion with a view to deprive another religion of its assets and source of sustenance, must be considered criminal and therefore, severely punishable under law.

Given the seriousness of this complaint we believe that Govt. should conduct a full and comprehensive investigation, punish the miscreants and restore the lands to the temple. By taking a firm stand in this case the authorities can set an example and send a stern warning to those conspiring to spread “religious and communal disharmony” in the state that their mischief will not be allowed to succeed. Simultaneously they could assure the general public that their religious rights and places of worship will be protected.

Restoring, by taking expeditious measures, the role of the community in temple management and setting up Hindu Advisory Councils should be an integral part of the new policy.  Such Councils could play a role in oversight and decision making process of the endowments department and temple Trusts. These Councils elected or nominated by the Community, state and national religious leaders could shoulder a significant amount of decision making and management responsibilities.  They could also stop desecration and decimation of the religious infrastructure taking place under Govt. control of religious entities pending denationalization, and till autonomous Boards are constituted for taking over the charge.

Responding to the need of our times it will be highly desirable if the government constitutes a Waqf like Hindu Board.  As a matter of fact such an advice has already been provided by the Allahabad High Court for overseeing the management of Hindu religious institutions and places of worship, to the government of Utter Pradesh.  This judicial advisory has universal applicability.

We would like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration. We are also hoping for receiving an early response strongly upholding equality and freedom of all faiths as dictated by India’s national Constitution and principles of secularism.
