Marxist youths now hail Mother Mary

published on September 22, 2011

The DYFI, the youth wing of the CPI(M), seems to have given up Marx for Mother Mary.

The Vlanthakara unit of the DYFI has put up a flex board hailing Mother Mary in connection with the holy feast at a church there.

Of course, the DYFI has not given up its customary heroes including Che Guevara and Bhagat Singh but they occupy minuscule space in the poster which has a big picture of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus.

To add to the affect, the flex board also quotes the verses of the Bible: “From now on all generations will be called me blessed”.

The DYFI’s public adoration of a religious icon comes at a time when young stalwarts like former MP from Alappuzha, Dr K.S. Manoj, and another former MP, AP Abdullakutty, had to leave the CPI(M) saying they were not being allowed to practice their faith.

Interestingly, the flex board has created quite a furore in the Facebook. While one FB regular, Babu Lal, said that posters of Marx had even disappeared from Moscow, T.K.D. Gafoor said this was just the party’s attempt to survive.

The picture was posted in the facebook by Baiju John with a tag, ‘Will the priests rule the AKG Centre?”
That may not happen soon but surely the dictum ‘religion is the opium of the masses’ is old hat.
