Protest the reality show tiltled ‘Comedy Express’ aired on Asianet Plus

A new reality show titled ‘Comedy Express’ is on air on Asianet Plus, a Malayalam channel. This is a reality show to find the most talented comedy team/actor in Kerala.
In the show, teams are tested on their skill in rapid, spontaneous & natural presentation of comic roles and foot-tapping numbers etc before they advance to the next rounds.
This comic Reality show ‘Comedy Express” was kick started in the presence of leading film artistes Siddiue, Jagadeesh, Babu Raj, Asianet Managing Director K.Madhavan, Asianet Business Head John Brittas and others were some of the special dignitaries who attended the ceremony.

While going through the episodes of this reality show what is striking is that the majority of the participating teams in this show, take instances from Hindu epics and present them in the so-called ‘modern’ way. Also, Hindu Deities, Saints are mimicked, and that too in a vulgar way. For eg. in one episode, ‘Modern Shakuntala’ was presented in which Shakuntala was dressed vulgarly. Saint Durvasav was seen using mobile phone and dancing to the tune of some ‘rock songs’. King Dushyant was shown as giving a mobile phone with some of his and Shakuntala’s clippings as a memoir to her. In another episode, Hindu priests and in general Hinduism was mocked at – It was shown that a priest was called to ward off negative energy problem of a lady. The priest comes to the house of the lady and asks the family members for some items for the pooja, like fruits, etc. Instead of performing pooja, he is shown as eating the fruits kept for the puja, dancing with the lady, etc.

But none of the participating teams take instances from Christianity or Islam as themes to present their skit. They do not make fun of Christianity or Islam either. Why only Hindu Deities, Saints and Hinduism is targetted?

What is more heartening to see is that one of the judges, Mr. Jagadeesh (a cine actor) is a Hindu, so are many of the celebrity judges who come to the show. In addition, many Hindus too are present in the audience. But all seem to enjoy this show and loudly applaud the teams on such performances. Not one of them feels like protesting or stopping such presentations.

The other thing is that the show is titled ‘Comedy Express’ – to test the acting skills of actors. But the skits presented by the teams have really no meaning, it is just some baseless stories/scenes enacted. The dressing and way of presentation too seems too bad. It is a pity that the young generation who watch these episodes, might go the wrong way.

The show is only hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. It is time we all unite and protest this show.
