Here’s why Madhani is not a saint

KOZHIKODE: With the PDP stoutly denying charges levelled against it and the CPM throwing its weight fully behind the outfit, certain questions naturally pop up in the minds of voters of Kerala.

Why, for starters, should they refuse to believe persons who have made statements against the PDP leader Abdul Nazar Madhani when these persons are not PDP’s political adversaries, nor apparently have any personal scores to settle with Madhani.

Mani alias Yusaf, one of those who gave a statement to the police, was with Madhani when he was in jail.

Another is the teacher of the school where the daughter of Sainudheen, the hardcore terrorist, studied. She had stated that it was Sufia Madhani who accompanied her during the time of admission. Abdul Khader, who stated that Sainudheen is Madhani’s close friend, also does not have anything against Madhani.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had said the statements against Madhani were something ‘old’. Four Malayali youths were killed in an encounter with the security forces in 2008. The police interrogated and recorded the statements of all those connected with the incident. And 2008 is not Ice Age, by any chance? The defenders of the PDP and its leaders say there is nothing concrete to implicate Sufia in the case. “She only received phone calls from the accused.” But Abdul Jaleel, an NDF worker in Kannur, was arrested for receiving calls from the accused! When Jaleel was arrested, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the NDF was a recruiting agency for terrorists. DYFI activists had pasted posters all over the state branding the NDF anti-national. But the CPM uttered nary a word when around 15 persons, most of whom are connected to Madhani, were arrested one by one.

And the CPM doesn’t seem to know that there is a case still pending against Madhani at the Fast Track Court(II) here for ‘recruiting’ a youth for training in Pakistan.

Madhani says the police had examined the statements of the witnesses and found them false. How did the police come to the conclusion before interrogating Madhani and his wife? The PDP and the CPM will have to answer these questions to the electorate’s satisfaction soon enough.
