Groom beheaded by ‘salishi court’

He was a Hindu who hid his identity to get his love. He was successful till he was caught and beheaded by his Muslim in-laws.
 
 

 
Parsad, a construction worker from Bihar hardly knew that his chance encounter with his lady love Amina in Mumbai and a marriage thereafter would finally end in his execution by a salishi sabha — much touted people’s court by Bengal’s Marxist Government — or a kangaroo court a year later.
 

 
According to the woman in her mid-twenties hailing from Laxmanpur village in Murshidabad district, she was working in Mumbai as a maid when she came close to Parsad from Bihar. The duo got married under Special Marriage Act after a brief courtship.
 

 
As Amina’s village was fiercely conservative, she and her husband hid his identity when they visited the village. Nothing happened during the first visit. A year later the groom once again visited the village under the same adopted name with his wife and a 10-month-old son and were well received until his parents-in-law overheard about his real identity when the couple were talking.
 

 
He was furious but kept his cool and immediately went to the local juries of the salishi sabha decided by the CPI(M) Government. They called the boy. Unable to fathom what lay ahead, he silently followed his parents-in-lawnot to return again. Later, Amina told the police how her husband was first beaten up by the “court”, then gagged and pulled off to the fields where he was beheaded. Local police inspector Arun Das feels amid the sea of bigotry there was only silver-lining that “the woman and her brother were now stubbornly seeking justice.” The prime accused and one of the three so-called juries of the village court were missing, police said.
