‘Certificate Hindus’ in Kerala

published on March 18, 2012

Recently I had to visit the website http://www.egazette.kerala.gov.in/ where the gazettes related to name change, lost passport , drivers license are all published -Part IV Private Advertisements and Miscellaneous Notifications. I have to help one of my friend who
needed to get a printout of his name change gazette. While searching for his notification  I came across several other gazette notifications which I  thought was worth sharing

– There were several gazettes related to religion change from Christianity to Hinduism. To be very specific a lot of them were related to people changing from Christian Cheramar, Christian Pulaya to Hindu Cheramar , Hindu Pulaya respectively.

What prompted me to write this?

It is very clear that as per the rights provided by constitution of India , the most backward communities and backward communities are eligible for reservations in jobs, admissions to schools or colleges based on certifcate provided by muncipal authorities. If by any chance
the families of these candidates who put gazette notifications where converted and baptized, their SSLC certificate will have the religion as Christian . This will derail their hopes for a government job or benefits as most of them are still restricted to Hindus (Thank God).

So quick solution for  this problem is go to Arya Samaj, get a shuddhi certificate and then use that to publish the gazette. With all due respect to Arya Samaj and its excellent work, I am not sure whether the Samaj has enough resources to do a background check of all these
candidates “applying ” for shudhi certiifcate or rather they even know why they are converting back. Also there is no proper process to check whether these people are following the rituals and traditions of Hindus after they get reconverted back from Christianity. I did take some time to go back and review few prior editions of gazette available online and there are several cases like this. And the bottom line is if we are having such a huge number of reconversions in Kerala then the media syndicate headed by Christians and Communists won’t keep quiet and there should be enough brick bat /allegations against Arya Samaj by now. Nothing of that happened till date. The only instance which I remember is of the case against Kodikunnil Suresh MP who had the same issue and he had to go to supreme court and won the
case using the same “gazette order” which he published several years ago. The opponents were non other than Congress people themselves who know very well what religion he practiced on a day to day basis.

What is the consequence of such gazettes?

Like we saw in Kodikunnil’s case , very easily using the legal loop holes and gazette system converted people can claim the benefits of OBC by just a gazette notification. In fact they are even lazy to do that these days they are fighting for reservation to people of all OBC
irrespective of religion. A constitutional amendment to open reservation to all religions is not that easy and smooth process as we all are aware.

What we should do?

Hindu organizations should keep constant vigil on these kind of notifications and file challenge petitions where ever they see a fraud/ intent to claim reservation is the motive behind these gazettes. Otherwiese days are not that far when OBC has to fight in court to claim the seats they are eligible for.
