Catholic priests not practicing what they preach

KOZHIKODE: “So do not start worrying; where will my food come from? or my drink ? or my clothes ? These are the things the pagans are always concerned about.

Your Father in Heaven knows that you need all these things. Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what He requires of you, and He will provide you with all these other things.

So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.” Gospel according to St Mathew, Chapter 6, which priests regularly sermonise while proselytising.

However, tomorrow seems to be a matter of worry for a large number of Catholic priests in Kerala, who run for life insurance cover.

Even while exhorting the distressed laity to find solace in God and “not to store up riches for themselves here on earth,” the men in cassock are parking money in insurance, particularly in the pension domain, to find a financial friend for their sunset years, though they do not have daughters to marry off or wards to send for higher education; two points insurers highlight to sell their policies.

Yet, when ‘This website’s newspaper’ contacted, spokesmen in many dioceses declined to divulge details. “Why we should tell you regarding the insurance,” dares Fr George Madathiparambil, of Mananthavadi diocese.
