Boastful Imitations

via GSK Menon published on May 26, 2009

While coming from Cochin Airport, on all lamp posts one can see posters of a foreigner called St.Jude along side a huge Hindu lamp. The poster boasts that this is the biggest lamp and is installed at St.Jude’s Church at Koothatukulam. Is there any meaning in these meaningless imitations ?

The Hindu lamp has a unique meaning and religious symbolism. The head of the lamp denotes Lord Shiva, the stem represents Lord Mahavishnu and the base represents Lord Brahma. The wick represents Goddess Parvathi and the flame Goddess Mahalaxmi. In what way is it connected to this Desert religion ?

I find some of the more fanatical and embarassed converts putting a Cross on top of the lamp.
