New Delhi: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury received a lashing rejoinder from none other than Philipose Mar Chrysostom Valiya Metropolita, even as the former tried in vain to project the Bharatiya Janata Party as “being an outcast”. The Patriarch stated that only they (Marxists) had a problem acknowledging BJP, and that “we harbour no such outlook.” The rejoinder came during a meeting in Delhi’s Mar Thoma Church Centre.

The reference to BJP cropped up, as discussions on Kerala’s election scenario came up. “Let BJP or Congress or Communists come (emerge victorious),” said വലിയ Metropolita, to which Yechury made the critical statement that “BJP should not be allowed to come up at such a fast pace” and that “their ideology is something that cannot be acknowledged.”

It was at this juncture that the Metropolita gave a darting reply to the Marxist leader about that “not being the case for us, but for you (Marxists). That is how you have interpreted it. That is not how I have comprehended them,” he said.

The meeting was part of the birth centenary celebrations of Metropolita, with a documentary on the Patriarch meeting a hundred leaders is being planned.
