City of Fort Collins’ HRC’s spotlight on Hinduism !

In a ground-breaking motion this month, the City of Fort Collins’ Human Relations Commission has announced that it is hosting an educational program about Hinduism. This unique event will commence with Vedic recitations and lighting of an auspicious oil lamp by the Mayor of Fort Collins. The event, called “Culture Classroom: Spotlight on Hinduism,” will be held on Diwali day (November 5th, 2010) at City Hall Council Chambers. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is an auspicious day celebrated by over 1 billion Hindus worldwide. This event will be organized by the Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA), a non-profit, tax-exempt organization in the USA.

Hinduism is often misunderstood due to misconceptions, such as ‘Hindus worship many gods’, ‘Hinduism propagates the caste system’, ‘Hinduism gives an inferior status to women’, ‘Hindu rituals are superstition’, and so on. The presentations and the exhibit at the Spotlight on Hinduism aim to dispel such misconceptions by promoting an understanding about the unique spiritual science underlying Hindu concepts and practices. They will highlight Hinduism’s inherent value in addressing and providing solutions to worldwide problems like the environmental crisis, religious intolerance, terrorism, crime and immorality.

The Spotlight on Hinduism will provide attendees with ample opportunity for clarification and discussion with speakers on questions they might have on the subtle science and spiritual practices of Hinduism. For example, what is the significance of the red dot worn by Hindu women or the benefits of vegetarianism vs. non-vegetarianism, etc. The Spotlight on Hinduism welcomes everyone interested in understanding, living or preserving Hinduism.
