UK Caste Discrimination Claims are Exaggerated

via HCUK published on June 20, 2008

London :

The Hindu Council
UK (HCUK), Britain’s first and most representative umbrella body for the UK
Hindu community has welcomed a report released today by the Hindu Forum of
Britain (HFB) stating it too has found no evidence to suggest caste
discrimination is endemic in this country. The HFB report matches many of
the findings of the Hindu Council’s own investigation into the matter, written
by Dr Raj Pandit Sharma and published earlier this year on 14th February (see http://www.hinducounciluk.org/newsite/report/hcuk_thecastsystemreport.pdf)

Like the HCUK report pre-dating it, the HFB concludes that there is
absolutely no need for legislation to combat caste discrimination, given that
there is no evidence of it, and that certain MPs who have complained about caste
may have been unduly influenced by Christian groups seeking to convert members
of the Dalit or ‘untouchable’ community here in Britain and abroad, groups
seeking Government funds to continue their prejudice and discrimination against
Hinduism.

“Such has been the
efficacy of these Christian groups’ lobbying tactics, that at the time we
published our report back in February, many in the government and the media felt
our conclusions must surely be wrong,” says Anil Bhanot, HCUK’s General
Secretary. “We hope this new report will add weight to our views that
legislation on this matter is unnecessary and that calls for legislation will be
seen for that they are – a dangerous red herring in the genuine need to combat
inequality and prejudice. We also hope MPs who have been hoodwinked into
supporting Christian groups that have the hidden agenda of converting perfectly
happy Hindus to Christianity will recognise their mistake and cut all ties with
them immediately.”
