India is eminently Qualified to be permanent member of UNSC

published on October 5, 2014

United Nation Security council occupies the authoritative position in the maintenance of international Peace & yet it is viewed as fast becoming irrelevant. The membership of the  council and its its working methods do not reflect contemporary realities.  Even though  geopolitics has changed drastically, the Council has not substantially evolved since 1945 when wartime victors designed a Charter and assigned  themselves with permanent seats and vetoes in the Council.

As we move towards 2015 , which will mark the 70th anniversary Summit of the United Nations, it is important to make the organization “fit for purpose.”

The Council has faced international pressure for substantial reforms since 1991.  However, despite lengthy discussions on the expansion of the Council’s permanent seats, Africa continue not be represented.  Europe is over represented & Asia is under represented. It also lacks representation from developing countries, which make more than half the world.

India was one of the 51 members of United Nation at the time of its formation in 1945& therefore has long history of engagement with it.

It is about time that India is included as one of the permanent Members.  First in the debates over the councils reform,India represents developing countries’  perspective, and it is supported by wide majority of them & several African Countries.

Second by any objective criteria, such as territorial size,GDP, Economic Potential civilization legacy, cultural diversity, political system, population and past & ongoing contributions to the activities of the UN, India is eminently qualified for permanent membership.

It is really illogical that country like India who has  irreplaceble economic & political role is still not permanent member of security council.
