Criminals yesterday attacked two houses belonging to Hindus at Debidwar upazila of Comilla, a city in Eastern Bangladesh. They assaulted at least 10 people, vandalised idols and furniture in the houses and robbed them of their valuables.

Locals said a group of 20-25 people, led by Ashikur Rahman, 17, attacked the houses of Gobinda Chandra Sutradhar and Rabindra Chandra Sutradhar around 8:00am and beat up the residents.

Five of the injured, including a 10-year-old girl, were admitted to the Debidwar Upazila Health Complex.

The perpetrators also beat up the neighbours who had come forward to help the victims during the attack.

Locals said the Hindus on Tuesday night had protested gambling near a temple where a six-day religious programme was going on. Ashikur, who had organised the gambling event, also harassed a girl that night when she was returning home from the temple.

Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman of Debidwar Police Station said two people, Roman and Al Amin, were arrested in a case filed in this connection while Ashikur was on the run.
