Hindu temples, homes attacked across Bangladesh

DHAKA: Islamic activists have attacked dozens of Hindu temples and hundreds of homes across Bangladesh since an Islamist leader was sentenced to death for war crimes last month, a Hindu group said Wednesday.

Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, a group which looks after Hindu temples, said 47 temples and at least 700 Hindu houses had either been torched or vandalised since the verdict against Delwar Hossain Sayedee. Sayedee, vice-president of the country’s largest Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, was sentenced to hang on February 28 for crimes including rape and murder committed during the 1971 independence conflict. The sentencing of Sayedee and other Jamaat-e-Islami leaders has triggered the worst violence in impoverished Muslim-majority Bangladesh since independence, with 85 people so far killed in the unrest.

Kazal Debnath, a vice-president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, blamed the attacks on Hindu temples and homes on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir. “It was the work of the Jamaat and Shibir, but we also accuse the government, the police and the local government representatives including (our) MPs for failing to protect the temples and our community,” he told AFP. He said the attackers were given free rein to “torch our temples, houses and properties”.

Jamaat has denied any role in the attacks, blaming supporters of the ruling Awami League party for the violence. But Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told diplomats last week that Jamaat and Shibir attacked Hindu temples and houses in a “pre-planned manner”. Hindus, who make up nearly 10 percent of Bangladesh’s 153 million-strong population, are traditionally seen as supporters of the Awami League, which brands itself as a secular party.

They were the main targets during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war against Pakistan and during post-poll violence in 2001 when a centre-right party allied with Jamaat won a two-thirds majority. Jamaat-e-Islami leaders have been on trial at the domestic International Crimes Tribunal, accused of colluding with Pakistan and pro-Pakistan militias during the war for independence. But the party says the process is an attempt by the ruling party to settle scores and not about delivering justice.

    Make Ismists real victims
It is strange that when majority Hindus are tortured, discriminated & eliminated
wholesale in Kashmir, Bangladesh, Pakistan & other countries by Islamist there
is no one to raise his/her voice against these atrocities & genocide. Where are
the bleeding heart TV anchors like Burkha Dutt, NDTV, Teesta Setalvad &
Newspapers like TOI & HT & other leaders of Congress, Trinamool or Communists?
Are not Hindus also human beings for these low creatures? I am outraged to find
some Bengali bleeding heart Hindus always in the forefront to attack Hindu
leaders & cry with their Jihadi comrades. They were there in the forefront to
oppose Dr. Subramaniam Swamy at Harvard & now they are there in Wharton also
opposing the visit of our hero Modiji.

Three Indian-origin professors; Toorjo Ghosh, Ania Loomba and Suvir Kaul at
UPenn wrote a strong letter to Wharton & the University leadership felt it could
not be ignored. The professors said they were “outraged” that Modi had been
invited & UPenn later withdrew the invitation.

It appears that these modern fashionable liberal Bengalis are very happy &
thrilled that the Bengali Hindus are being systematically segregated, tortured &
killed in Bangladesh & their places of worship burned down? Where are the
opportunistic Mamata Begums, Mullah Mulayams & Dogvijay Singhs? These bleeding
hearts should behave more even handed if they want any type of respect from Hindus. You cannot play the Muslim card always against Hindu interests.Muslims always behave like victims in every country & try to garner sympathy & support & people support them for fear of their own lives.

    Hindu civilization under attack
Raj, your comments expose the unquestionable truth. It appears that Hindus are under the spell of a curse. Irrespective of all these atrocities and experiences facing them on a daily basis, they still refuse to do anything about it. We can do many things to build the awareness and expose the truth.

    Bangladeshi Hindu plight
Now its high time, destiny takes its curse on these unfaithful Bangladeshi fantatics on the heinous atrocities enacted on hapless Hindus. Afterall what is the fault of these innocent Hindus. Is being a Hindu a fault in Bangladesh ?

During Bangladesh liberation more than 30 Lacs Bangali muslims were ruthlessly murdered by Pakistani militiary in support of some unfaithful Bangladesh fanatics.

What is the fault of Hindus? Why these innocent hapless Hindus there are targetted? Is there any law order in Bangladesh ?

But beware the destiny is watching and if such attacks on Hindus continue, these fanatics will be cursed and wiped by the destiny.

    Burkha succeeds, Hindus fail
Raj Puducode, though you speak rightly the question is not what is Burkha Dutt doing. She is doing what she is good in: dcimating Hindus, like the others you mentioned.

The question is: what are Hindus doing? The answer: very little.
It would be wrong and foolish of us to expect Hindu-bashers to take up the cause of Hindus. It would be rightful of us to expect Hindu community and their businessmen and leaders to speak up, form a Hindu lobby and pressurise the government. And in the worst case, even use force (there are many kinds of force).
But neither we, nor most of our leaders do anything. So, it’s not Burkha and her likes who are failing, to the opposite, they succeed each time in their mission, but it’s we the Hindus wh’re failing….
We Hindus seem to like it to fail…..each time.
