Minority status extended to all Minority owned institutions – Will NSS and SNDP learn any lesson?

via HK published on July 6, 2010

New Delhi : By allowing Minority status to any institutions owned by Minority religions National Minority commission is challenging the guidelines of Supreme court.

As per Supreme court guidelines an institution can gain Minority status if they are catering the needs of minority students and 50% of the students should be from minority community. National Minority Commission now amended it and allows Minority status to all institutions owned by Minorities irrespective of the percentage of minority students in the institutions.

Benefits of Minority status

(a) Minority educational institutions do not have to maintain reservation in employment or admissions for SCs, STs and OBCs as required to be done by other educational institutions.
(b) In terms of control over employees, minority educational institutions have much greater powers than other institutions. For instance, in the selection of teachers and principals the minority educational institution can have a selection committee which does not include the university representative. Similarly, while in ordinary schools the headmasters normally have to be appointed on the basis of seniority, minority managements can select a headmaster of their choice.

After Effects

By extending Minority status to all Minority owned institutions , SC/ST reservation guaranteed by our constitution  will be  violated in case of both admission and employment. These institutions will get all the grants which other institutions get and on top of that they will get special handouts and concessions. While Government  hand out enormous amount of Tax payers money as Salary and Pension to staff in these institutions, They have no say in the admission process of staff. These institutions can fill their posts fully with   members of their own community.

Minority status to professional institutions owned by Christians and Muslims will have far reaching effect in a state like Kerala were Hindus are already Marginalised. Will the NSS who aligned with Christian institutions and SNDP which developed an affinity with Jihadi organisations for some selfish gains learn any lesson from this?
