Do Not Use Candles To Light Hindu Lamps

via GSK Menon published on December 11, 2010

A new trend being observed is the habit of using candles to light the traditional Hindu lamp at various functions. The correct practice is to light the lamp from another lamp. Candles are never used in any Hindu function.

No doubt, candles are convenient, but convenience is something different from accepted practice. The Christians are responsible for initiating this new trend of candle lighting for Hindu lamps. It is a very common sight to see Hindu lamps being used by the christian converts in churches and other alien functions. The lamp denotes the Hindu trinity of Brahma/Vishnu/Shiva. The base represents Brahma, the stem represents Vishnu, the head represents Shiva, the wicks represent Parvathi and the heat represents Lakshmi. This is the meaning of the Hindu lamp. The Hindu lamp is so beautiful in concept and design. Lured by the beauty, the followers of the desert religion are now using it in churches and other evangelical functions. But, they want to retain the candle, which is their symbol, so they first light the candle and only thereafter use it to light the lamp. Why should Hindus do this. In many public functions the candles are being used which is not an ethical practice as it is made from Bees wax.

So please avoid using candles in our functions.

In metros we find our youngsters blindly aping the western youth and holding candles in the name of observing vigil. Desist from this practice, use diyas instead of candles.
