Asianet Shahina’s report & ABVP’s victory

via HK Correspondent published on November 23, 2006

In Kerala there are very few people who are not aware about the background of Muslim-born Asianet journalist and well known Hindu-baiter Shahina. A former SFI leader and a cardholding member of CPM never misses any chance to attack the ‘Sangh Parivar’. Her main hobby is to criticize Hindu organizations including BJP while doing her job ‘professionally’. It was one of her reports about ‘rebel BJP leaders meeting’ at O. Rajagopal’s residence that forced the managing editor of Asianet to apologize to O.Rajagopal privately to avoid any legal action threatened by the BJP leader.

Recently, the same Shahina reported about the ‘victory’ of SFI and KSU in university elections. She reported the news while standing in front of an SFI flag and praising SFI. According to her, the election was a direct fight between SFI and KSU. She took short interviews of SFI candidates and a KSU candidate just to appear ‘balanced’. She had also mentioned about few other students union candidates including the Campus Front of Islamic terrorist organization NDF but in her news coverage lasting 3 minutes 28 seconds, there was no mention at all about ABVP!

This type of ‘news’ will definitely give an impression to Asianet viewers that there are only two students union in Kerala — SFI and KSU.   But Shahina and Asianet News did not notice the victory of ABVP at various colleges in Kerala. People came to know about the surprise victory of ABVP at various colleges of Kerala University the next day through various print media.

ABVP won all the seats of M.G. College – Thiruvananthapuram, VTM-NSS College Dhanuvechapuram, Ayyappa College, Chengannoor and NSS College, Cherthala. Nine ABVP candidates won in university councilor election at various colleges. Apart from these, ABVP won many seats in Thiruvananthapuram district, important general seats, association representative and class representative seats. The ABVP’s historic victory at Kollam NSS college was a surprise and shell shock to SFI.

Similar type of one-sided news questions the authenticity of Asianet news, especially Shahina’s reports, into seriously. We appeal to Asianet viewers to beware the news reporting by Shahina and send your feedback/protest to [email protected]
