Press Council of India warned Indian Express

via HK published on December 12, 2006

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti had earlier protested against the anti-hindu artist MF Husain for his nude paintings of Hindu Deities. The huge rallies organised by HJS had forced even the secular Congress Government to consider arresting MF Husain for hurting the Spiritual Sentiments of Devout Hindus and Hindu Community in India and abroad. After the artist had absconded and hidden abroad in an unknown place, the secular bandwagon headed particularly by the pseudo-secular media began publishing articles against HJS blaming it for “suppressing creative expression” or targeting Husain merely because he was a muslim. Recently, HJS protests led to cancellation of Saffron Art Gallery exhibition of MF Husain’s paintings.

One such a totally baseless and defamatory article had been published by the Indian Express. In the article Indian Express has described Hindu Janajagruti Samiti as “Fundamentalist”. The National Spokesperson of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Dr. Durgesh Shankar Samant, had written a letter to the editor of Indian Express newspaper explaining Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’s stand and how all rallies, movements organised by HJS were the “FUNDAMENTAL DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS” of the Hindu Community. HJS had not resorted to anything illegal. However, Dr Durgesh Samant’s letter and his arguments were not published in the Indian Express.

Under the circumstances, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti had lodged a complaint to the Press Council of India against Indian Express. The Press Council of India has issued a warning letter to Indian Express asking it to exercise its news reporting with more responsibility and has also sent a Show Cause Notice asking an explanation for branding HJS as Fundamentalist Organisation which amounts to pursposeful defamation and misuse of mass media.
