Communists take to puja, darshan

via Pioneer News Service | Thiruvananthapuram published on February 25, 2007

Communists, who are traditional non-believers are mired in controversies with leaders vying with each other to have darshan in temples and to conduct specific pujas to emerge more stronger in the political games.

It seems that comrades are fast losing their confidence in mass strength and instead banking on the strength of supernatural powers to help them out of the tumultuous politics in which they are immersed.

CPI Minister C Divakaran’s wife conducted a Garudan Thullal in the Thrippukudam Mahadeva Temple, Thalyazham the other day. According to locals present, she had reached the temple premises and had camped in the residence of a family friend and monitored the proceedings in the temple.

Ultimately she reached the temple in the wee hours of the morning and attended the culmination events related to the ‘Thullal‘. Believers state that this particular offering was given to the Lord for getting rid of ill-effects and for total prosperity.

It is learnt that Divakaran’s wife had even given a feast in connection with the Thullal. A huge amount was spend on the extravaganza of the Minister’s wife, according to people close to the temple officials.

The string of events related to the Communists’ faith started with CPI(M) MLAs Aisha Potty and MM Monay taking their oath as legislators in the name of God.

The CPI(M) State secretariat had decried the whole exercise and in party reporting which was passed on to even branch committee level party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who had attacked the comrades who had taken their oath of legislatures in the name of God .

He has also categorically said that the Communist party leaders and party cadre should stick to certain qualities in life and there should not be any action from them unbecoming of a Communist.

Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly and CPI leader Jose Baby offered ‘Tulabaram‘ to Lord Guruvayoorappan even though he was not allowed to enter the temple, he being a Christian.

According to his close associates he or his family members had prayed before the Lord for his victory and thus conducted the offering outside the temple. The faction ridden CPI(M) was in a shock when a publication ‘Janashakthi‘ brought out by expelled Marxists produced an article that the wife and son of State Home Minister and firebrand Communist Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had performed ‘Poomudalpuja at Kadampuzha Devi temple. It may be noted that there is a waiting period of more than 30 years for conducting this puja.

Kodiyeri got the preference being a VIP of the State. The Minister at first tried to wash his hands off the controversy stating that he or his family had never been to the temple. To defend himself he came out with his Atheist credentials and declared that he had not even performed the last rites of his mother.

The State CPI-M leadership however came to his aid and the story which circulated was that it was a high school teacher of his home town Thalassery, who had performed the puja, instead of Kodiyeri.

The temple authorities stick to the point that it was indeed the Minister’s wife Vinodini and son who had arrived at the temple for the offering along with the personal staff of the Minister.

There was a huge controversy after CPI-M leader late EMS Namboodiripad had accompanied his wife to the Subramania Swamy temple at Pazhani. The ashes of late comrade EK Nayanar were also immersed in the sea near Kanya Kumari by his family members. In both these cases the party leadership had defended the criticism with the theory that it was up to the family members of party leaders to decided upon their beliefs.

It seems that the Communists are believers in private and Atheists in public and the people of the State who elected them are not bothered about their private life.

What matters to the voter is the clear subterfuge, which the Communist leaders practice to hoodwink them.
