Criticisms make CPM liberalists impatient

The so-called liberalists in the CPI(M) are the worst fascists in the party when it comes to tolerance towards criticism. Symptoms of this intolerance were first shown in the worst manner by none other than the leader of the liberalists, party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan at a public function when he spoke about Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi.

Pinarayi’s colleague in the party and lieutenant in the liberalist camp, P Jayarajan, had also shown unrestrained intolerance in the State Assembly and outside it.

Crusader for the liberalists’ camp, an ardent Pinarayi-loyalist and general manager of party’s Malayalam organ Desabhimani, known these days for slush money deals, EP Jayarajan on Saturday proved that the fascist attitude of the liberalists is not just an accident but an established trait of theirs with a no-holds-barred speech in Kannur.

True to his stature as a Pinarayi-loyalist, EP Jayarajan, who is also a Central Committee member of the party, used all kinds of derogatory terms to refer to Justice Sukumaran Nair, who had criticised the CPI(M) secretary for his alleged connections with slush money sources and people of doubtful reputations.

Vijayan had some days back attacked K Gopalakrishnan, editor of Mathrubhumi, in the vilest possible language for the exposes it had published about the slush money deals in Desabhimani, which had caused a much embarrassment and a credibility crisis for the party.

Jayarajan, speaking at a function in Kannur on Saturday, went a step further by calling Justice Nair a peera, which could mean a nincompoop or wretched person.

Alleging that there was a camp of vested interests working overtime with the sole goal of finishing off the CPI(M) and the Left movement in Kerala and India, Jayarajan said, “Didn’t these people bring a peera Sukumaran to attack Pinarayi Vijayan in a speech? Kerala is ashamed that it had made this peera a judge.”

A former theoretician of the party said that just like Pinarayi Vijayan, who was growing impatient as he was in a vortex of allegations like the SNC Lavalin affair and the slush money deals connected with liberalists, Jayarajan was losing his cool amidst the criticisms coming in from all sides for his acceptance of Rs 2 crore from “lottery king” Santiago Martin for Desabhimani.

“The fact is that right now almost nobody in the common public and a good majority of CPI(M) workers do not put their trust on the liberalists for their alleged connections wit people with mafia or mafia-like relations. This credibility crisis is of almost maddening potential as far as communist party leaders are concerned. The option then is to resort to arrogance or feigned strength,” he said.

The other Jayarajan, initialled “P”, an MLA was enraged to such an extent by the expose made by Mathrubhumi of the slush money contribution from Santiago Martin to Desabhimani that he called Mathrubhumi, a yellow paper, during his outburst in the State Assembly.

When Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan corrected him in the name of the party saying Mathrubhumi was a paper with the tradition of fighting for the freedom of the country Jayarajan declared that he held fast to his opinion and that he would repeat his opinion even outside the House also.

Pinarayi had sparked off the present spell of liberalists’ intolerance towards criticism and negative exposes in July first week with a scathing attack in the basest possible language for a political leader of his stature when he addressed the Mathrubhumi editor with terms like Edo (‘hei’ used in situational derogatory style) and than (you in the same way). “What did you think about this party?” he asked Gopalakrishnan. Then he went on to warn him saying, “This (CPI(M) is a party that has grown amidst a lot of unsheathed daggers.”

“The liberalism shown by them is just a façade,” said the former party theoretician praying anonymity for obvious reasons.

“They grow impatient when they feel their existence is in danger. The fact is the recent developments have shaken them to the core. They have no explanation to offer to the common people or the party workers in the cases of the slush money deals,” he added.
