Deal of the Century-To cover up sex abuse of Church!

via HK published on July 16, 2007

In what can be called as the deal of the century, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is brokering a deal of 660 million US dollars to pay compensation to over 500 sex abuse victims. These victims were abused over a period of time by the priests of the Church. Ironically they will be paying this out of the money put in by the believers!!

Cardinal Roger Mahoney says that the abuses that go back to the 40’s will not happen again. But how much faith has the congregation lost on this account? Can the faith and belief of the people be brought with money?

The offer for compensation came after they were threatened to produce the files of these cases over the years to court. The Church would have then had to explain how they covered up these cases as when it came.

Like the Sister Abhaya case on Kerala, the priests were usually transferred off to a different country hoping to be rehabilitated. But did it solve the problem? Have these priests then become habitual offenders? What is the punishment in America for covering up a rape case and protecting criminals?

Half of this amount is to be covered by insurance agencies. Had the Church foreseen such Sexual adventures by the clergy and added it in the insurance agreements?

In any case this would be path breaking method for the Christian clergy to settle disputes with the law by paying them off.
