Recruitment drive for ‘Brides of God’

Being married to God, once considered a pious thought or deed is slowly becoming extinct within the Christian community of India, especially Kerala.

Unlike earlier times not many parents are encouraging their children to become nuns to follow the path of Sister Abhaya.

Almost 75% of the nuns in India come from Kerala. In districts like Kottayam and Pathanamthita .It was once considered as a great deed to give one of the female siblings in the family to the church to become a nun. Many of the orthodox and strict Christians of earlier times often taught their girls the sacredness of being a nun from a very small age.

But the new age thoughts and controversies revolving around the Convents and Churches is has shaken the spirit of devout Christians. Parents are no more ready to sacrifice their kids life in the name of their God. This sharp drop in student’s enrollment to become nuns is causing serious concern for the Christian congregations.

With the dwindling numbers in middle Kerala the congregations are focusing now on the Malabar region. Places like Thamarssery and Mananthavadi is seeing lots of camps being held by various Christian missionaries targeting children who have finished SSLC and Plus Two.

There are 154 different congregations active in the state; Competition among each congregation has paved way for increased forced conversions. As the Traditional Christians are no more interested in sponsoring brides to their God- Missionaries are targeting poor Hindu families for the same.
