Amsterdam:A US airline flight to India returned to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport today, escorted by two Dutch F-16 jet fighters, after the crew reported some passengers were behaving suspiciously, authorities said.

The Northwest Airlines flight to Mumbai (Bombay) was diverted “when a couple of passengers displayed behaviour of concern”, an airline spokeswoman said.

“Police took off a number of people on board and took them for questioning,” the Dutch defense ministry said.

A US passenger said she had seen police handcuff and remove about 11 men of south Asian appearance from the plane before other passengers. She said she didn’t see what happened but heard from other passengers that the men had aroused suspicion by getting out their mobile phones.

Dutch NOS news reported that 12 passengers had been detained.
