The income-tax department has found the daughter and son-in-law of National Human Rights Commission chairman Justice K G Balakrishnan used unaccounted cash running into a few crores to purchase land in and around Ernakulam. Justice Balakrishnan’s son-in-law PV Sreenijan is a Youth Congress leader.

A report signed by the deputy commissioner of income tax, central circle one, Ernakulam, says K B Sony, daughter of the former Chief Justice of India, purchased 36.1 cents in Varappuzha from one Linjo Joseph. While the documented price for the same was Rs 7.27 lakh, Linjo, on oath, said he received Rs 16 lakh “all in cash” for the deal. The assesse did not withdraw any cash from any of her bank accounts.

Similarly, Sony and her husband, P V Sreenijan, purchased 29.6 cents of land in Edapally South village from one Dr K K Dandapani for Rs 30 lakh. For this deal too, the assesse didn’t withdraw any cash from any of his disclosed bank accounts, which means even the documented value was an undisclosed amount. Later, Dandapani on oath said he sold the land to the assesse for Rs 2.13 crore and the entire amount was paid to him in cash.

The I-T department has also found anomalies in an under-construction property at Annamanada in which Sreenijan made an investment of Rs 67.89 lakh. This again is an unexplained investment that doesn’t match his known sources of income.

According to the I-T department, Rs 50 lakh that Sony and Sreenijan received from Rosy Blue — a Mumbai company that is under scrutiny for black-money connections — for giving legal advice was also suspect. As per the department’s investigation report, there was no evidence of the two giving legal advice to the company.

The investigation report has advised the department to recover all taxes due from the duo for executing deals with unaccounted cash.
