Where to squeeze more quotas?

via Dharma published on July 16, 2008

Its surprising to see the media go into a frenzy and have
debates on TV  when the faculty of a
particular minority institution staged a strike against the colleges minority
quota within the faculty.

The college already has 50% quota for the students meaning
50% seats are reserved for Christian students. And now the management of St.
Stephen’s college in Delhi has introduced quota for the faculty as well leading
to protest from the faculty. It is understandable on their part of the faculty
to do so.

But the question remains as to why the same faculty did not object
to the 50% reservation imposed on the students? If the Christian minority
institutions formed to teach a particular community alone? Is this the colour
of the secular character we claim? This is akin to the Medical students
protests a few years back in Delhi. The students never had a problem with
reservations in any schools, colleges or government jobs. But when it came to
reservation in higher courses, which would hurt their professionalism, they
came out on the streets !! Caste based segregation is what will be finally our death call. It is time for the Hindus and Hindu leaders to come forward and call for a full removal of caste differences as promised by our constitution.

It is time for the people of India to think out of the nut
shell. Don’t just react to issues when it hurts you personally alone. Every wrong
decision taken on the fate of our country needs to objected if you think it is
wrong. Because in the long run you will suffer the consequences of your
silence.
