We are not worthy of a democracy?

via HK Correspondent published on January 15, 2006

”Even as we call ourselves a democracy, Indian security forces control and administer Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland and the numbers of the dead and disappeared continue to mount,”

Arundhati Roy ( The Malayala Manorama, 14JAN06).

Well the writer would probably have preferred these places to be handed over to separatist movements. Why does our country give birth to such characters, I always wonder.

People like this. under whatever label, cannot be tolerated for any reason. She might be world famous person and might be admired by a whole lot of people. But she has no right to live in a country that is protected day and night by thousands of soldiers. Soldiers who brave the sun, the heat, the cold mountain winds, the snow to protect us. If she wants to enjoy all this and more she must understand that our army needs to be kept out of her political dramas. That very army that protects her is doing its best to contain the insurgency in the places she has mentioned.

Would she rather have these places given off to the separatist and start a chain reaction in each and every state? The whole country saw what the separatist movement in Punjab did to our country. We have seen what separatists have done in Sri Lanka. Their cause might be just or unjust. But separatism once entertained can start the demise of any nation. This message is also for the Indian government to listen. You gain nothing by supporting the Maoist separatists in Nepal. Once in power they will always side with their ideological friends in China. It will also lead to increased Maoist activities inside India which has been on a rise ever since this communist supported UPA government has come to power. While she talks of the countless dead, she refuses to acknowledge the countless troops killed in trying to preserve these places as Indian territory.

Mrs. Arundathi Roy, with all respects to your writings and intelligence, its better you stick with your dams and not interfere in matters that concern the security and integrity of our nation.
