Vellore Jailer Transferred – Convicts celebrate!
A news item in Dinamalar, (Chennai Edition, 27-2-13, p.11) informs us as follows:
There are more than 1100 prisoners including Rajiv Gandi murderers lodged in the Vellore Central Prison for men. Complaints of ganja, beedis, mobile phones, SIM cards, batteries being freely available with the prisoners were made. It is also alleged that the IB has complained that the conspiracy to murder BJP Medical wing secretary Dr.Arvind Reddy, Rowdy Devaraj of Chennai and many others was hatched in this prison. To improve discipline in the jail Addl. SP Sri Kumaresan was transferred to the Vellore Jail and took charge on January 17th last month. Soon he had seized and confiscated 25 mobile phones, 156 SIM cards, 200 batteries. He had the Goonda Act prisoners transferred to separate cells, and enforced other disciplinary methods. This infuriated the convicts who conducted several demonstrations. A few days back some 15 prisoners climbed on to a water tank and threatened to commit suicide. They refused to eat the midday meal. The bonhomie existing between prisoners and jail staff was badly affected. The prisoners sent complaints to the State Government that Kumaresan was the man responsible for destroying Goodwill. As a result Sri Kumaresan was suddenly transferred out to Sri Vaikundam jail on the 26th night. This delighted the prisoners, who distributed sweets and danced around in joy.
It is said that some Jail Staff have sent a petition to Sri Tripathy, ADGP, to transfer Sri Kumaresan back to Vellore.
Our jails are a Happy Paradise for happy criminals.
