The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered withdrawal of a case against alleged Tariq Qasmi, HuJI operative. Qasmi has been arrested in connection with the 2007 serial blasts in Gorakhpur. The blast left 6 injured.

The move comes following the Samajwadi Party’s election promise of withdrawing terror cases against “innocent youths”. This will be the first case that will be withdrawn.

The Akhilesh government has directed the District Magistrate of Gorakhpur to file an application in court to withdraw the case in which Qasmi faces charges under the Explosives Act, 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act, and attempt to murder.

Qasmi’s lawyer Jallaudin Khan said the charges against Qasmi are yet to be framed. The accused, a Unani doctor at Azamgarh is facing trial in the cases of serial blasts which took place in the courts in Faizabad and Lucknow on November 23, 2007 as well.
