Two Lashkar men held in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, June 09: The Gujarat Police today arrested two terrorists, who were reportedly planning to blow up several key places in the capital city. The terrorists allegedly had Somnath Temple, Akshardham Temple and offices of RSS and VHP on their target list.

Police sources also claimed that the militants Waqil Ahmed and Umar Farooq Sheikh were in regular touch with some Pakistan authorities via Internet regarding their terror plans.

The Gujarat intelligence agencies had received definite reports from several sources about terrorists and anti-social elements likely to push forward their activities from rented premises in the state.

Acting on such reports, City Commissioner of Police KR Kaushik has advised landlords to compulsorily register details of tenants at local police stations.

Justifying the step, he cited increased terrorist activities in different parts of the country having links to Gujarat, a release issued in Ahmedabad on Friday said. “Intelligence reports say such outfits are out to disturb peace and cause large-scale loss of lives and property, with a view to striking terror,” he said.

A notification to this effect would be issued shortly, asking all landlords to register such details as full name and permanent addresses of the tenant, the rent and the built-up area of the premises, besides the name and contact address of the landlord as well.

The details have to be furnished between June 10 and August 9, 2006 as per the notification. Those failing to furnish relevant details within the stipulated time would be punished, the release added.
