Sewa International Releases $10,000 to aid Sikkim Earthquake Victims
Fremont: Sewa USA is releasing $10,000 towards Sikkim Earthquake Relief efforts as volunteers from Sewa’s sister organizations in India have started relief operations in severely damaged Northern Sikkim.
President of Sewa International USA, Professor Sree Sreenath, said that 52 volunteers from Sewa Bharati have reached the places worst affected by the earthquake.
Three teams of Sewa volunteers have setup a base in Chungthang in Northern Sikkim. One more rescue team with relief van carrying blankets, drinking water, grains, oil, cookies (biscuits) and other essentials is on its way.
The relief work is presently being coordinated from Siliguri in North Bengal, India. There have been 20 landslides that have caused terrible damages, roads are blocked and travelling has become difficult.
Sewa volunteers have built up a great reputation for providing relief to disaster victims. The 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Hurricane Katrina in the US in 2005 and the 2009 Andhra-Karnataka floods in India are a few recent examples of the effective relief operations Sewa International managed.
