Diseases and disabilities should not be treated as part of one’s fate. The Seva Bharati, Calicut, is a voluntary service organization striving to give all possible assistance to those who suffer, and to instill in them self-confidence. Seva Bharathi which works with the motto, “MANAVA SEVA IS MADHAVA SEVA” has been extending a helping hand to the unorganized and neglected needy sections of society.

The free distribution of rice gruel to the in-patients of the Calicut Medical College, the Seva Mandiram which provides shelter to the destitute, providing help and guidance to those who reach the Medical College for treatment, providing wheel-chairs and crutches to the physically challenged, eye donation to bring light into the life of the blind, medical camps, blood donation, ambulance services for moderate rates, making available portable water through Rain Water Harvesting Project, formation of self-help groups to achieve self-reliance in society, etc. are some of the service activities conducted by the Seva Bharathi.

The free distribution of rice gruel at the Calicut Medical College  has been kept going without any interruption for the past seven years through generous donations received from the well wishers and sympathizers on occasions of marriage ceremonies, birthday celebrations, Shraddha ceremonies of the departed relatives, and other events important to people. 

The Seva Mandiram, operating  in its own building near the Calicut Medical College hospital, is rendering help and assistance to patients and their bystanders. Now, regular Yoga chasses are also conducted there.

By launching the self-help groups, the Seva Bharathi has taken yet another firm step to inculcate the sense of swadeshi to the area. They have mobilized to form a self-help group which engages in book binding and in the manufacture of soaps, paper bags, toys, umbrellas, ready made garments, etc. The project, which had a humble beginning, has now become pervasive and will surely hasten the process of national self-reliance; specially, the Ladies’ self-help groups are poised to make a quantum leap in the field. The fair price Super Market jointly launched by seven such self-help groups will certainly be an inspiration to start such ventures at other places.

Even while people were merely discussing the benefits of the Rain Water Harvesting Project, the Seva Bharathi workers had translated it into a reality at Olavanna Panchayat, near the Calicut City Corporation. The rain water from the rooftops is collected in a Ferro-cement tank and purified into drinking water. The scheme could, to a large extent, solve the problem of water scarcity in the locality.

Seva Bharathi has already initiated exploratory work in right earnest to start an orphanage for small male children deserted by their parents. A herbal farm, Sanskrit study centre, Vedic education, Yoga centre, library of spiritual books etc., will be the salient features of the orphanages.

Seva Bharathi also proposes to start a working women’s hostel at a suitable place in the city. It also proposes to start a Medical Guidance Center, clinical laboratory, X-Ray and scanning units that would render services to the public at affordable rates.

The Seva Bharathi would like to inculcate in the minds of the people the feeling that it is the Dharmic responsibility of every person to help those who are in need and enlist their co-operation and support its activities.
