SHIMOGA: A sound mind dwells in a sound body. Discipline, regular physical and mental exercises and good knowledge were the main mantras to develop a sound body.

Keeping this in mind, Rashtriya Sevika Samithi (RSS) organises regular camps for its members at its Shakhas (branches).

“RSS is a cultural organisation of Hindu women. Women constitute the backbone of the family. Hence, we concentrate on developing her both mentally and physically,” secretary of South Karnataka division of the Samithi, Savithri Somayaji.

With this view the Samithi imparts training to women. The training involves wholesome development of a woman – physically, intellectually and spiritually.

It holds periodical training camps of varying durations, from time to time, for intensive exposure of the Seviks to various issues country has been facing. The main training is given in annual camps. This year annual training of the South Karnataka division is being held at Adichunchanagiri School in Shimoga from May 6 to 20.

“Rashtra Sevika Samiti is committed to the cause of the glorious Hindu Rashtra. Creating awareness among women regarding their cultural and social responsibilities so as to develop a generation with more patriotism and humanity is the goal,” said the PRO of the South Karnataka Sevika Samithi Sudha Murthy.

Nature of training is to cultivate regular diet and exercise habit among participants. In addition, organisational capacity, mutual love, affection, good will, faith, healthy character building, coordination and unity are also developed.

“Good Samskaras should be developed in children so as to build a healthy national character. Women have this responsibility,” said Sevika Meenakshi.

Physical training too was important with the motive to make all sevikas of all age groups, healthy and strong enough to protect themselves. This makes them independent and capable of using discretionary power and presence of mind. Karate and other martial arts and physical exercises are taught to boost the confidence and to develop leadership qualities among participants.

“Boldness to face any situation, daring, pure character, patriotism etc. automatically evolved through the training provided here,” opined a participant from Bangalore, Pavitra.

Even sessions of reading or narrating stories are also held. Discourses on Ramayana and Mahabharata, Bhagawadgita, Bhagwatha etc are arranged. Samiti also patronises music, arts, literature, which help healthy development of personalities. The Samithi is on its way to develop more responsible and cultured society through progress of women.

This is for the second time the camp is being held in Shimoga. Last time it was held in Vasavi School about 12 years back.

The camp was being held for girls above 14 years of age. In all 155 participants from 12 districts have come this time. Participants are divided into 9 ganas (groups). From Shimoga 67 girls are participating.

Ten Shikshakies (teachers) teach them yoga, physical exercises, karate, march past, band practise and playing musical instruments etc. Even debates, lectures by resource persons and story telling are also organised.
