The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior leader of the BJP LK Advani has said that the UPA Government at the Centre was trying to act against the Constitution by implementing reservations on religious basis. He said that the Government decision to provide reservation to Muslims under Sachar Committee reports and the reservation for converted Christians are against the Constitution of the country .

The BJP leader was addressing a mammoth gathering of the SC/ST morcha of the party in Kochi on Saturday.

He said that the over indulgence of reservation on the basis of religion is against the ideals of the Constitution and said that the UPA is insulting the makers of the Constitution.

The BJP leadership has been coming out against the UPA trying to upset the present system prevalent in the country and that the reservation policy on religious lines would lead to a total development of sectarianism and divisionalism within the country. The party is of the view point that this should be totally opposed and that the BJP should expose the Government’s duplicity on reservation.

The BJP State president PK Krishnadas presided in the meeting which was also attended by the party All India Secretary Balbir K Punj. The BJP State vice president V Muraleedharan translated Advani’s speech. The party leaders AN Radhakrishnan, PM Velayudhan and the SC/ST morcha leaders were also present in the function.

There was a mild commotion during the lunch break when the pandal erected for providing food to the delegates broke down. Some workers suffered minor injuries and the organisers heaved a sigh of relief as Advani had left the place by then.

The Intelligence IG Rishi Raj Singh and the Central zone IG Vincent M Paul were responsible for the security.

Tight security was provided to the BJP leader as there were intelligence reports that terror outfits from across the border had renewed fresh threats to his life. The National Security Advisor MK Narayanan had personally conveyed on the threat to Advani a couple of months back.

While addressing the birthday celebrations of Bishop Philipose Mar Chrisostom organised by the Mar Thoma Church in the KC Mamman Mappila hall in Kottayam, the leader of the Opposition said that certain individuals and organisations are behind the creation of the unnecessary controversies regarding his visit to the programme. He said that Mar Thoma Church was one of the few organisations in the country which has opposed the implementation of the emergency and added that he had a special relation with this section of the Church.

There were reports that a section of the Mar Thoma Church were against the invitation extended to the BJP leader to attend the jubilee celebrations of the supreme head of the Church Mar Joseph Chrisostum.

However, the official spokespersons of the Church have come out with the allegation that there were no objections to the arrival of Advani in the function. The Church spokesperson had also said that if there were any objections from any side within the Church they should have come out in the open.

The BJP leader went to Nagarcoil from Kottayam and will be back to Kochi on Sunday. He would inaugurate a discussion on his autobiographical work “My life, My country” at the Gokulam convention centre in Kochi on Sunday.
