Shankaracharya of Puri Jagadguru Swami Nischalananda Saraswati has strongly condemned the attack on Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in Kandhamal and demanded a strict law to curb conversion. The Puri seer also organised two separate protest meetings in Maharasthra and Chhattisgarh over the issue and will be back to Puri on Tuesday from Chhattisgarh, Gobardhan Pitha sources quoting the seer said on Monday.

In a statement released by the Gobardhan Pitha in the name of Puri seer said, “This pre-planned and well organised attack on Swami Laxmanananda was a gruesome attempt to murder him in cold blood. It is a shame for us. He has been relentlessly working for the poor since last 50 years in Kondhamal and other Vanvasi districts of Orissa,” The Christian missionaries have already encroached numbers of Government land and built churches over them. These churches have become the centre of conversion and epitome of anti-social activities, the statement said. Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati urged the State Government several times to evict those unauthorised churches. But nothing has been done yet. The Government should take a serious step and evict these unauthorised churches and strictly execute the existing anti-conversion enactment. Our Aditya Bahini shall protest against this incident,” it said.

Meanwhile, Orissa Banabasi Kalyan Ashram has alleged that the local Christians are threatening Hindus to leave their homes in Katinga, Daringabadi Brahamnigaon and Gadapur areas of Kandhamal.
