Kollam :Surendran, father of Sumi, an MCA student at the Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies (Macfast), Thiruvalla, who committed suicide the other day, has come out strongly against the Christian priesthood. Surendran, who was working in the Gulf, told reporters that the priests were crucifying them and were trying to raise false allegations against them. The college is managed by the Malankara Catholic Church.

Surendran said on Monday that the priests were not trying to understand the grievances faced by the parents of the girl and added that any loss of property was not more than the loss of a daughter.

Surendran’s protest was against the version given by the Thiruvananthapuram Vicar General of the Church in its publication Aikyadeepam. In the article, it was alleged that the suicide note of the girl was actually written by someone else.

“Sumi had written in the letter that these priests had black minds. Those words have become true now,” Surendran said. He said that such statements were equal to “crucifying us who are grieving at the loss of a daughter”.

“They say that irate students had caused huge damage to properties of the college. I don’t deny this. Students could have done this. But those things could be made again. But can these priests bring my daughter back?” he asked.

Pointing out that he had lost a daughter whom he had loved so much and looked after all these years, he said the statements from the college management and certain priests attached with the management made one believe that the losses suffered by them in property was more precious than the life of a young girl.

He said that he expected the priests to behave in a much more reasonable manner and they were forgetting their basic commitment towards the society.

The incident relating to the tragedy occurred after a laptop computer owned by the girl was stolen and she raised a complaint before the college authorities. It is alleged that the college management had acted as though she was raising false allegations and that they had tortured her mentally.

The girl committed suicide following this and after that the angry students had held a march to the college and in the milieu several furniture and glass panes of the college were destroyed.
