No new law

published on September 17, 2008

Throwing cold water over the comments of Shivraj Patil and the recommendations of the Verappa Moily led ARC, PM Manmohan Singh has announced that there will be no new terror law.

The UPA has gone a full circle ending speculation mthat the government may actually do something this time after Delhi. Of course, they wouldn’t or couldn’t do it. A new terror law would strike the heart of their minority vote banks and the UPA or rather Sonia couldn’t afford that, close to elections. As they are well aware once the law comes into force, who will be picked up by the dozens!!

A new federal agency is now being recommended to specifically deal with terror activities. Without a strong law to stand by its activities, we can almost be sure it will be another toothless tiger.

One one side the PM claims his government is not soft on terror and on the other hand after three largely successful bombing attacks, he claims our intelligence gathering has failed. This despite the fact that CM Modiji of Gujarat had warned him before hand and if we were to believe the claims of Shivraj Patil that intelligence had information of the Delhi attack.

One would have to wait and see how long the UPA can prolong these discussions as the elections approach and they are keen to throw the whole bombing episodes under the carpet.
