Muslim League MLA praises Narendra Modi, retracts later

Muslim League MLA KM Shaji is said to have praised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, stating that it was wrong to hold Modi responsible for the carnage. However he has retracted his statements, alleging that it is nothing but a media fabrication, which he intends taking up on a legal footing. Shaji is said to have showered praises on Modi at a League meeting held on 6 March at Kadavatoor.

Commending Modi for his developmental skills, Shaji is stated to have remarked that the Gujarat Chief Minister never had a hand in the riots that took place in Godhra.

“Narendra Modi had absolutely no hand in the Gujarat riots. There was no ‘Hindutva agenda’ in the riots either. The Chief Minister cannot be held responsible for the deaths, nor has he issued orders to attack or destroy a mosque,” Shaji allegedly said.

“It is only after a couple of meetings with Human Rights activists that I came to know this. The carnage was sponsored by traders. Just that religion was used as a convenient tool and cover,” Shaji is supposed to have stated, adding that big time industrialists began their foray into the state after this incident.

“Have you gauged the unity that prevails among Hindus and Muslims of Gujarat? Malayali Muslims have only words of goodness to say about the Gujarat Chief Minister. In matters of development, Modi should be made an exemplar, no doubt,” praised Shaji.

The praise is said to have been rendered in the presence of other leaders of the Muslim League.
