Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will spell out the ‘development mantra’ to his counterparts from other BJP-ruled States during the party’s two-day national convention on good governance in Mumbai, starting June 5.

Called Suraaj Sankalp (Commitment to Good Governance), the event would attempt not only to bring good governance back on the centrestage of politics but would also try to set the tone for elections in several States.

Modi, who has always been at the forefront of the BJP’s assault against the UPA over governance issues, would deliver the keynote address on the first day of the mega conclave, which would be inaugurated by party chief Nitin Gadkari.

Senior leader LK Advani, who has also been a vocal advocate of good governance, will deliver the valedictory address. All BJP CMs, Deputy CMs, concerned Ministers from BJP and alliance governments will participate besides the State presidents and organising secretaries from BJP-ruled States.

Former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is the convener of the newly-created governance cell of the BJP, told reporters the conclave would review some noteworthy and innovative welfare and development initiatives by BJP-ruled Governments. “A charter of good governance, presented by former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, would also be adopted during this convention,” Parrikar added.

Implementation of the party manifesto, coordination between party organisation and Government as well as keeping alive the link with party’s support base would be discussed in depth.

There would be parallel sessions on education, employment, health, agriculture, women and child welfare, social justice and tribal welfare, natural resources management, infrastructure, law and order, judiciary, rural development, panchayati raj and urban management.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will deliver a lecture on Governing Party-Opposition Party Interface while Arun Jaitley, her counterpart in Rajya Sabha, will speak on administration and management issues. There would be a separate discussion on Government– Party Organisation Relationship.

To be held at the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini’s Knowledge-Excellence Centre at Bhainder near Mumbai, Parrikar claimed this convention was the first-of-its kind initiative by any political party in India.
