Middle East travelogue of two Ministers

via Raghavan Nair published on June 8, 2006

Union Minister Arjun Singh is now on a very ambitious tour in the Gulf countries and in each state he makes generous declarations. In Abu Dhabi he held talks with UAE Higher Education minister and reached an understanding for exchange in the fields of Higher Education and Scientific Research. In Saudi Arabia he had a 6 day official visit and made declaration to the Pravasis that from next year onwards, there shall be a centre in Saudi Arabia also for the entrance examination to professional courses.

In Dubai he made a declaration that his Ministry has already decided to establish an Arab-India Cultural center at the Delhi Jami Al Milia University. A reception was arranged for him by the Muslim Education Society, UAE Chapter (MES – which started the first self financed medical college in Kerala, first self financed engineering college in Kerala and now own over 1200 educational institutions). During the reception, the Minister did not forget to reiterate to the enthusiasts that Government will definitely maintain the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (it raises doubts whether our ministers are sent abroad on public expenditure to propagate minority appeasement policies or the secular nature !).

He did not forget to praise the Madrassa education which has been revised recently in tune with the changes taking place in the country.  Present on the occasion were the MES President, Indian Ambassador to UAE and the UGC Chairman.  What a paradox?  A minister who strongly opposed to an educational exchange programme with Singapore which the UGC mooted earlier now tours the Gulf countries at Government expense and wooing entrepreneurs to enhance the educational infrastructure of the minorities and accepting hospitality of a private education society and in such meetings make all out efforts to boost their morale by assuring them protection as per statute!!!

While the corps of unfortunate Pushparekha still lies in a mortuary at Trivadrum unclaimed (She died on 10 April by falling from the 3rd floor of a flat in Kuwait under mysterious circumstances), the Union Minister for NRIs Shri.Vayalar Ravi is on a crusade to cleanse up the immigration offices.  It has been a few travel agents and officials like Protector of Immigrants (POE) Mr.P.V.Suryarao (who is now under suspension when the CBI has filed case against him) that allowed the flow of domestic servants to foreign countries by floating the safeguards that the government has set up to check such migration. There is need to spread public awareness to put an end to sending ladies to these countries as housemaids, bar ladies, beauticians, private nurses etc.  (the titles are many but finally they all end up at the same destination). Recently, Minister Vayalar Ravi held an official visit to these countries, but in some states he was even denied audience with the Labour Ministers. He returned quietly blaming the embassy personnel for the lapse.

So, these ministers are very eager about the foreign trips and mingle passionately with those in higher echelon and are useful to them. They spent public money for the trips but gain little for the public. They must be exposed at every point and also their designs.
